De-extinction is defined as the:
The process of generating an organism that both resembles and is genetically similar to an extinct species by resurrecting its lost lineage of core genes; engineering natural resistances; and enhancing adaptability that will allow it to thrive in today’s environment of climate change, dwindling resources, disease and human interference.
Till date, 902 animals are extinct and 9,251 are critically endangered. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) estimates the following:
38% of all species are on the verge of extinction today.
50% of all primate species are at risk of extinction.
68% of all plant species are on the brink of extinction.
The main reason for the extinction of species is habitat loss.
Can we get back some of the extinct animals? A startup company called Colossal Biotechnology thinks it is possible to get back some of the extinct animals.
It recently raised $200 million in funding and is valued at $10 billion.
